Twitpic, which was once the largest photo sharing service for Twitter users, has been acquired and will continue offering their service.

Twitpic announced they were closing earlier this month following a trademark dispute with Twitter that could have seen them lose access to Twitter’s API if they didn’t abondon their trademark for Twitpic, which they had been working through the process of trademarking since 2009.

It is unknown who the new purchaser will be, and what it means for their current business name and trademark application.   But it seems to have happened quite suddenly, as they had a previously announced shut down date of September 25th and were actively assisting users in saving their images from Twitpic.

At the time of Twitpic’s earlier announcement that they would be closing, Twitter released a statement saying they were sad to see Twitpic was closing down, but that they had to protect their name.
