No Need for Separate Mobile Sitemap Unless Designed for Feature Phones

When you have finished making your site mobile friendly, do you need to submit a mobile sitemap as well?

In the Google Webmaster Help forum, the question was raised about mobile sitemaps, if a separate mobile sitemap is required once a site is made mobile friendly or if they should just duplicate the regular sitemap and submit that.  Google’s John Mueller responded to the question and for most webmasters, a mobile sitemap isn’t needed.

In simple terms, feature phones are phones that aren’t smart phones but do have some basic internet and web browsing capabilities and sometimes social media functionality.   Think back to the original iPhone or a very, very inexpensive “somewhat smart” phone today.  However, designing specifically for feature phones is not very common today.

For those whose sites are designed for feature phones, Google has support information here on feature phones and here for creating a feature phone sitemap.  But chances are good that if you don’t know what it means to have a feature phone site, your site doesn’t need one.

But if you just have your standard responsive mobile-friendly site, you don’t need to submit a new mobile sitemap.
