Google Testing New Style Carousel in Google Knowledge Panel Results

While looking at the new style of medical knowledge panels that trigger from brand name medicine searches, I notice that Google is testing a new style of carousel in their search results.

When displayed, you can scroll through “most commonly used for” conditions for various medications.

Here is an example:

And a few more examples (although for some reason, the arrow on the scroll didn’t show up on the screenshots)

This style also would make it easy for users to swipe through the “most commonly used for” on mobile devices.  But it is quite different from the usual style of carousels we see in the Google search results, such as the ones triggered for movies and celebrities.

It is interesting they chose to highlight “most commonly used for” though.  I would have thought if they chose to use it for side effects instead, it might have a higher usage.  But for more obscure medications, it might be useful to see what it is used for.

This is only being tested for a limited number of searches in the US at this point.  But because this looks so mobile-centric, I would definitely expect this to become the standard.
