If you happen to hide a post on Facebook for any reason, Facebook is not only suggesting you unfollow that person who originally posted it, but also that you message that person to “resolve this”.
Someone I am friends with on Facebook share something from a radio station. And for hours, this particular post was at the very top of my newsfeed despite none of my other friends engaging with it, so understandably, when I kept seeing the same thing on repeated visits for such a long period of time – and it was one of those types of images radio stations like to share – I had enough and just didn’t want to see that particular post anymore. So the actual reason was Facebook’s fault, not the original poster, but I just didn’t want to see it anymore after a half dozen or more visits to Facebook.
After opting to hide the post, and then selecting that the reason was “It’s annoying or not interesting”, Facebook suggested I unfollow the poster – which makes for great user experience – but that wasn’t what I wanted to do, I simply wanted to force Facebook to show me something new as the top post after many hours.
But something new, Facebook now prompts users to “Message ____ to resolve this” with a description of “Give ____ feedback about this post.”
This has evolved from the original “hide” and then “hide from timeline” option Facebook initially added. I suspect people – particularly those who post controversial topics – will have an issue with Facebook openly soliciting to users that they message someone who posts something they find objectionable for any reason, especially since Facebook can run wild with people’s posts about all manner of political, religious and other hot topics.
