Google is finally taking the knowledge panel / shopping ad hybrid and showing it to mobile users. Until now, it had just been showing to desktop users.
Google first began testing these hybrid knowledge panels that contained data as in a regular knowledge panel, but with the addition of sellers as a sponsored Product Listing Ad unit in the sidebar, back in July. And since Google likes to keep desktop and mobile similar, it isn’t surprising they have moved this type of listing to the mobile search results.
Here is how they appear in the mobile search results.
These new sponsored cards seem to be only active in the US right now. I could not get them to show up once I was back in Canada. However, as a Canadian user in the US, I saw “US” added to the price, while US users just saw “$779.00” without the extra “US” added before the price to denote the currency.
We have seen Google promoting these knowledge panel / shopping ad hybrids in the desktop search results this year, so it isn’t surprising to see them move to the mobile results. But it isn’t clear why these are not international, despite there being available advertisers in the desktop version.
Hat tip to Aaron Bradley, who was the first to draw attention to the new version when he asked for screenshots of it from the US.
