From their blog post:
There are trillions of searches on Google every year. In fact, 15 percent of searches we see every day are new—which means there’s always more work for us to do to present people with the best answers to their queries from a wide variety of legitimate sources.
As for the 15% never before seen queries, it makes a lot of sense when you consider the number of searches being done in non-English languages. It would be interesting to know what the percentage is for English queries and how the percentage varies based upon languages.
When you add voice queries into the mix, I am sure this definitely adds to that percentage, since people tend to use more keywords when searching by voice compared to when they do a search by typing.
Google also mentions the “trillions of searches” statistic, however this isn’t entirely a new one. Google included the stat last May as well in an AdWords blog post, but this updated number hasn’t been mentioned by the organic search side of Google until now.
