On Friday, numerous AdWords advertisers were noticing that they were suffering major quality score drops – some dropping 3-4 points, which is pretty significant for advertisers. They also began receiving warnings within the accounts that ads were not being served due to low quality scores. The lower an advertiser’s quality score is, the less their ads will appear while they will have to pay for those clicks they do get. So it understandably sent some advertisers into a panic.
Google states the quality score “bug affects reporting only, not ad serving”, which presumably means advertisers were not being charged higher despite the lower quality scores. However, advertisers will want to double check to ensure this did happen, as some advertisers were seeing 250% increases at the time that matches the quality score issue.
If you paused your campaigns when you noticed the huge quality score drops, you will not see the un-bugged quality scores until you unpause them and allow them to run for 1-2 hours. After that, the quality scores should bounce back to normal.
